📅 This Week In St. Albert: 📅

  • Merry Christmas! We hope you had a wonderful day with family, friends, and food! Thank you to every single one of our readers and supporters who reached out, donated, volunteered, or shared our content this year. We appreciate every single one of you and hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

  • We usually reserve these weekly updates for sharing news and analysis, but as the year comes to a close, we want to be upfront with you. Our year-end fundraising campaign is underway, with a target of $10,000 to be met by December 31st. This funding is essential to sustaining our operations and allowing us to carry our work into the new year. If you find our work valuable and want to help ensure it continues, we’d be grateful if you would consider making a contribution. Even a modest gift makes a meaningful difference. You can donate by clicking here, and we sincerely thank you for being part of this effort.

  • Mayor Scott Olivieri, two months into his term, reflected on his transition from the private sector to City government and the work completed so far. He praised the support of incumbent Councillors and City Administration, noting their guidance helped him navigate procedural aspects and the 2026 budget process smoothly. Olivieri highlighted that the budget included efficiencies and allowed the City to prioritize spending and plan for future capital projects. Looking ahead to 2026, he identified the Lakeview Business District, downtown revitalization, and northeast servicing as key priorities, emphasizing the importance of diversifying the City’s tax base. On northeast servicing, he stressed planning carefully to avoid burdening taxpayers in the long term. He also noted ongoing discussions with the school board about downtown properties and emphasized the role of public engagement.

  • Mayor Olivieri says the City is not planning to reconsider its 2024 vote to remain in Edmonton Global, even as four other municipalities have finalized their departures. Olivieri noted that discussions about St. Albert’s participation could happen in the future, but it is not a current priority. He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and plans to focus on attracting investment, particularly for the Lakeview Business District. Other departing municipalities cited concerns over return on investment, governance, and transparency, with some noting limited benefits from their financial contributions. Edmonton Global’s new CEO, Daryn Edgar, stressed the organization’s commitment to accountability and supporting regional prosperity regardless of membership changes. St. Albert’s contributions to Edmonton Global rose slightly in 2025, though future costs remain uncertain. Olivieri said the City will look at both the costs and benefits of membership as the situation evolves.

  • The Kingswood Park skating rink has been closed indefinitely after thieves caused an estimated $100,000 in damage by stealing copper wiring from the rink’s pumphouse. The pumphouse, which powers the rink’s lighting and flooding system, was rendered completely inoperable, and frozen pipes are further delaying repairs. Public Works officials said the rink, which opened in 2022 and was popular in the community, may not be available this winter, and repair costs will depend on replacing the damaged cables. RCMP noted that copper wire thefts are becoming increasingly common, often linked to recycling operations, and investigations will use intelligence-led policing to target prolific offenders. Residents are being urged to report suspicious activity near pumphouses as authorities consider increased patrols. While the park remains usable, reopening the rink will require significant effort and may not happen until the new year. Officials described the theft as extreme compared to typical vandalism incidents.
