On Tuesday at 9:30 am, there will be a City Council meeting. Council will consider recommendations from the Internal Audit Steering Committee regarding the 2025 Resource Planning Model Review. The review, conducted by MNP, assessed the City’s resource planning framework. The Committee is recommending that Council approve the preparation of a business case to centralize non-permanent employee recruitment within Human Resources and Safety for consideration in the 2027 budget. Centralizing recruitment could require three additional positions but would reduce risks of inconsistent practices, bias, and variable hiring quality across departments, according to the review. If not approved, the City would continue with current practices.

Council will also consider amendments to the City's policy regarding flag displays and commemorative lighting. Councillor Hughes will propose a motion to allow more days of significance and to clearly outline how many days City buildings will be lit for each event. Administration interprets the intent as expanding lighting to include both somber and celebratory occasions, while clarifying that longer events - such as Pride Month - would still only receive one chosen day of lighting. The policy would also be updated to cover all City infrastructure with LED lighting, including the Children’s Bridge once its upgrades are finished. Administration recommends bringing the amended policy back to Council by the end of Q1 2026.

Council will review another motion, this one from Councillor Joly, calling for the preparation of a capital charter for a new Performing Arts Centre. The proposal calls for consultation with community groups, school boards, and other stakeholders, with the goal of adding the project to the City’s 10-Year Municipal Growth Capital Plan. Administration recommends against the motion, citing existing facilities like the Arden Theatre and City Arts Space, which have available capacity, as well as ongoing planning for the Musée Héritage Museum and Community Amenities project. Studies and past planning documents indicate a potential need for a new performing arts venue by 2029. Approving the motion could incur costs for research and engagement and may necessitate reprioritizing other capital projects.

A report from the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce shows St. Albert added more jobs than Edmonton over the past five years. The city’s jobs grew by 5,540, placing it third in the region behind Strathcona County and Spruce Grove, and just ahead of Edmonton. St. Albert’s Economic Development Director, Mike Erickson, said the growth reflects the City’s nimble, business-friendly approach and mid-sized city advantages. About 500 new businesses contributed, along with the growth of existing businesses. Lower industrial property taxes and strong transportation networks were cited as factors supporting job growth, while Edmonton’s higher taxes may have slowed its industrial expansion. The Lakeview Business District is expected to add 5,000 more jobs once fully developed, boosting confidence in St. Albert’s industrial sector.
- St. Albert has officially renamed St. Anne Promenade as Veterans Way to honour local veterans. About 50 people, including veterans, City Councillors, and Legion members, attended the unveiling near the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. The ceremony featured a colour guard, vintage Second World War vehicles, and Mayor Scott Olivieri arriving in a replica 1942 military car. The idea for the street name came after residents suggested a crosswalk tribute, but City officials felt a street name would provide a more lasting recognition. Former Councillor Mike Killick, who proposed the motion, pulled the poppy-patterned cloth to reveal the new sign, calling it a lasting legacy for the City. Legion leaders highlighted that the street will serve as a visible reminder of veterans’ service and a gathering point for future Remembrance Day events.
